Was Neal Howard the richest man in the county????
George Howard, born in Rowan Cty, NC circa 1780-d.
1871. He left Rowan
County NC approx. 1815 with his son Cornelius and
migrated to Kentucky
where they settled around Floyd/Elliott County.
George lived to a ripe old
age and I am sure there is a picture somewhere, since
he lived with his son
Cornelius (Neal-richest man in Elliott County KY)
till his death in 1871.
Indeed, Neal Howard did have slaves, but the number was not large.
It would appear that he had no more than six at any one given time. He was
very kind to his servants, and, in fact, actually gave land to some of them
so they could establish their own homes. Some of the slaves and/or children
are buried in the Howard cemetery on a high hill on the original Howard
property.
